world of a pharmacist
my younger sister will follow my footstep in becoming a pharmacist... still long way to go, in 4 years of study, anything could happen.. let's leave the future to Allah.. we live in present, so i'll talk about today.. honestly, i'm the one that influence her to be a pharmacist.. i know that she's not into medic like i do- a hectic and stressful life and also world of diseases, needle and blood are absolutely a no-no for her.. by becoming a pharmacist, at least we know diseases and its treatment, although we focus more on the latter or specifically, medicines! dont have the right to diagnose is okay because what's the point of working if there's no job satisfaction at all? doing something that we dislike or hate will be the biggest regret later on, so better script the life that we desire right from the beginning.. true, we may not deal with death and life of people everyday, but by becoming a pharmacist, we care the patients in our own way..i'm not going to talk about preventing medication errors by correcting the dose, duration, frequency and so on (look simple, that small matter could prevent overdose/ death), that are the basic part in life of a pharmacist! what i want to highlight here is, with the knowledge as a pharmacist, we can make a huge different in patients's life.. for example, during one of MTAC session (medication therapy adherence clinic), i discover that a patient that was fasting skipped his medicines, that's why his blood pressure was high! small thing like this, if not known, will lead to increase the dose of his antihypertensive drugs or another drugs prescribed, which could lead to hypotension.. with lots of patients/ high workload with different attitude or 'karenah', i'm sure the doctor wont have time to ask if the patient took his medicines or not.. similar case in asthma/COPD patients, most patients dont know the right technique of using inhalers even after being counselled, so by correcting their techniques, at least the medicines will work the way they intended to do. their symptoms wont relieved/controlled with incorrect usage and that can waste governments' money too! in term of toxicity, let's say paracetamol or panadol overdose, the result will determine whether treatment with NAC ( antidote) is needed.. sometimes, doctors, especially new houseman dont know that the absorption of PCM was complete in 4hours, so there's no point of giving antidote if the level isnt toxic! that was linked to the way NAC work (mechanism of action).. in term of antibiotic, the right dose was determined according to their condition, and i'm sure only pharmacist know how to calculate the dose based on their level!
